Lauren McBrien smoothed out the list of questions she'd spent the past week crafting. [paragraph] The Virginia Beach fifth-grader had finished a book about an American girl who exchanges letters with a boy in Afghanistan. She had discussed the story with the 19 other members of the girls' reading club at her school. [paragraph] And now a guest speaker stood at the front of the classroom, ready for questions. [paragraph] Around her neck, Lauren wore a red dog tag on a chain. It reminded her why she had so many questions today. [paragraph] It read: "With love from Dad: US Marines, Iraq 2009." [paragraph] She wore it every day while her father was deployed. [paragraph] From the back, Lauren's hand shot up first. [paragraph] She knew Air Force Maj. Leigh Hasson had recently returned from neighboring Afghanistan. [paragraph] Lauren picked a question - actually, two - from her list: [paragraph] "What did you like about Afghanistan? And what did you do there?" she asked Hasson, who wore a green flight suit and whose hair was pulled back into a small bun. [paragraph] Hasson cited a delicious lamb dish as a highlight, then turned serious. [paragraph] "What I liked was having the chance to impact a country. They need us there. That's what I liked most." [paragraph] Lauren's dad had used some of the same words months earlier when he deployed to neighboring Iraq. [paragraph] Lauren and her dad have always been close, and his deployments haven't been easy. But this time, a book was bringing her closer to her father. It was the girls' first chance at a reading club, so Lauren was curious.
